A Message from the Athletic Director

Hello –

Wooster’s athletic program, which includes 32 interscholastic teams, has been recognized as one of the most successful small school programs in New England.   In addition to having numerous top ranked teams (including 46 league titles and 49 bids to the prestigious New England tournament), we have been honored with an astounding 44 sportsmanship awards in recent years.   We have created a program that carries out the mission of the school and benefits everyone involved.

What separates our program from most is our dual focus on fielding competitive teams and sportsmanship.   It is a rare athletic program that can combine and sustain both a competitive edge and have an emphasis on sportsmanship.  Wooster has been able to do so for years, as evidenced by the trophies and banners on display in our athletic complex.  One of the reasons for our successes is that our coaching staff is comprised (almost) entirely of faculty members, providing a well balanced approach to coaching and education.  Our coaches recognize that the athletic program provides a powerful forum for discovering and creating “teaching moments.” It is through these moments that we foster respect, confidence, teamwork, discipline, community, and self-esteem.  The more “teaching moments” that we create, the further we develop the skills and character of our student athletes; it is moments like these that will influence your children throughout the rest of their lives.

Wooster values the commitment of its athletes and has recently upgraded the athletic facilities.  In addition to our rolling 125 acre campus, we have three soccer fields, two volleyball courts, a cross country trail, three gymnasiums (with four basketball courts), six tennis courts, two lacrosse fields, a softball field, a baseball field, an ultimate frisbee field, and a  fitness center.  Our newest gym was built a few years ago through the generosity of Wooster donors, most significantly a major gift from Steve Young’s (NFL Hall of Fame quarterback) Forever Young Foundation.

In addition to having an excellent coaching staff, Wooster has a full-time certified Athletic Trainer.  Our Athletic Trainer is also a certified Performance Enhancement Specialist and is available to work 1-on-1 with student-athletes during the off-season.  One of the benefits of having an athletic trainer on staff is that physical therapy for injured athletes’ takes place on campus (at no cost to the families) which results in a quicker return time for the athlete.

Perhaps one of the most attractive qualities of our athletic program is that everyone who wants to be on a team can do so.  This is often not the case at most other schools.  In fact, we have a “no cut” policy on our all of our lower level teams and we guarantee playing time for each player in every game … again, something you will not find at most other educational institutions.

We would love for you to be a part of our outstanding program.  For further information regarding the athletic program, please contact me.

All the best,

Dave MacNutt
