Kyle Scheine ’11 – A Standout Athlete!

“Pound for pound the best athlete I’ve witnessed in my 19-year tenure at Wooster,” are the words Athletic Director Dave MacNutt used to describe Kyle Scheine ’11.  Kyle was selected as an All-State soccer player for the third consecutive season!  In addition to skills on the soccer pitch, Kyle was the starting point guard on our basketball (which won the HVAL season title and advanced to the Finals of the New England tournament) and was selected as both an HVAL and New England All-Star.  After earning goalie of the year honors for Division III lacrosse  last year, Kyle stepped out of the net this season and played midfield … for which he earned HVAL and New England All-Star honors.   A very talented three-sport athlete indeed.

An Evening of Celebration!

The 9th annual Upper School Athletic Awards Reception was a huge success.  Nearly 275 people (including coaches, players, parents, family members, and alumnae/i) were in attendance to recognize, congratulate, and celebrate the efforts of our student-athletes, coaches, and overall athletic program.  Wooster has clearly created an athletic program which is providing beneficial experiences for everyone involved.

Athletic Director Dave MacNutt shared a few of the athletic success stories from the past year, including:

  • 13 of our student-athletes were recognized as New England All-Stars
  • 39 of our student-athletes were named HVAL All-Stars
  • 1 student-athlete was selected as an All-State player … for the 3rd consecutive year
  • Of our 11 varsity teams that have league tournaments – 6 of our teams made it into the Final Four … and 2 played in the tournament championship game.
  • 1 of our teams won the HVAL Season Title
  • 1 of our teams set a New England tournament record this year
  • 3 of our teams were selected to play in New England tournaments this year
  • 1 of our teams played in the New England Championship Game

After the opening remarks, the focus shifted towards the athletes.  Each Upper School coach stepped up to the podium and briefly summarized their seasons and to presented the Most Valuable Player Awards and the Coaches Awards, as well as HVAL and New England All-Stars.  (Please visit our web pages for a complete listing.)

Several special recognition awards were also presented (visit our web pages for a complete listing).  Athletes of the Month were applauded, HVAL championship teams were cheered, New England tournament teams were honored, and departing coaches (Kathy Matero and Alex Zequeira) were recognized for their contributions to the life of our school.

The “Big 5” senior awards were presented next.  MacNutt announced “We have male and female winners for each award.  This year’s recipients have combined to earn an impressive:

  • 10 Selections as New England All-Stars
  • 14 Coaches Awards
  • 15 MVP Awards
  • 18 Selections as Athlete of the Month

  • And have played on a total of 78 Wooster teams in their careers

Headmaster Tim Golding was the final speaker of the evening and commended all student-athletes and coaches for representing Wooster in fine fashion throughout the school year and for their wonderful contributions to the life of our community.
