Wooster Announces the Athletic Hall of Fame!

Wooster Announces the Creation of the Athletic Hall of Fame!

Wooster’s Alumni Council and Athletic Department are pleased to announce the creation of the Athletic Hall of Fame.  We are proud and excited to honor all those who have made significant contributions to our athletic program, whether it was on the courts, fields, coaching sidelines, or in some other form.  The inaugural class of inductees will be recognized during Alumni Weekend in May of 2013.

The Athletic Hall of Fame is long overdue and we want to ensure that we launch this program successfully and with all of the fanfare it deserves.  We need your help to compile a list of worthy candidates.  Please let us know the following (and provide as much detail as possible):

  • Who were the top athletes in your class?
  • Who were the best athletes during your time at Wooster?
  • Who was the best coach you had at Wooster?
  • Were any school records established during your time?

We are always interested in learning more about our rich athletic heritage.  In addition to supplying the information above, we hope that you will share some of your most memorable athletic experiences with us.  Please email us at HallofFame@woosterschool.org and we will post some of your stories under the heading “Alumni Corner.” Our goal is to embrace both our past and current programs.

For a listing of Athletic Award Winners, please visit the “Awards” section of our website.

Please join us in May 2013 to celebrate the achievements of our first inductees.

Spotlight on Varsity Girls Volleyball

The former Jackie Goulding, who dominated the volleyball court as Wooster’s setter from 2002-2006, winning Most Valuable Player three years straight, and who is now Jackie Malyszka, is back in the Forever Young Gym—only this time, she’s coaching. There have been a lot of changes this year for varsity volleyball— three starting players graduated last year, five players are new to the squad, and both our coaches—Jackie Malyszka ’06 and Paul Gallagher—are new to varsity. Nonetheless, we’ve bumped, set, and spiked our way into the season with a record of 5 and 1, beating rival Harvey (even before our varsity and junior varsity teams were declared) in a tough match of five sets.

The returning players have nothing but positive things to say about the season. Sophomore Rachel Lynch and senior Geena Parlatore agree that the team is already “much more united than [we were] last year,” and Geena added the only thing she thought needs work was communication. Senior Erica Moran is also excited about the progress of the team so early, adding that she is looking forward to a great year. Junior Perry Gulden was happy with the new coaches, remarking that Coach Malyszka “pushes us hard [to see] what we’re capable of, and [along with] Coach Gallagher, she’s making us into a great team…and we’re still having fun!”

When asked about the season so far, Coach Malyszka said she was happy with the progress the team has made in the past few weeks, and she believes the team is getting better each day, although there is always room for improvement. She says, “we need to work on trusting each other on the court.” If the team can do this and keep its focus from point to point, Coach Malyszka has confidence that we will do extremely well in the HVAL, and possibly receive a bid to the New England tournament.
