Athletic Awards Reception and Celebration!

The 10th annual Upper School Athletic Awards Reception was a huge success.  Nearly 200 people (including coaches, players, parents, family members, and alumnae/i were in attendance to recognize, congratulate, and celebrate the efforts of our student-athletes, coaches, and overall athletic program.  Wooster has clearly created an athletic program which is providing beneficial experiences for everyone involved.

 Athletic Director Dave MacNutt shared a few of the athletic success stories from the past year, including:

  • 45 of our student-athletes were named HVAL All-Stars
  • 15 of our student-athletes were recognized as New England All-Stars
  • 8 of our varsity teams won HVAL titles this year … A School record
  • 3 of our teams received bids to participate in the New England tournaments
  • 1 student-athlete was selected as an All-State player
  • 1 student-athlete was selected as an Academic All-American
  • 1 of our teams established a New England tournament record this year
  • 1of our teams enjoyed an undefeated season – carving out a place for itself as the 32nd team in Wooster’s history to do so.

 After the opening remarks, the focus shifted towards the athletes.  Each Upper School coach stepped up to the lectern and briefly summarized their seasons.  The Coaches presented their Most Valuable Player Award and their Coaches Awards, as well as recognized their HVAL and New England All-Stars.

 Several special recognition awards were also presented.  Three-sport athletes were applauded, HVAL championship teams were cheered, New England tournament teams were honored, Sportsmanship Award winners were spotlighted, and departing coach Dan Levy was recognized for his contributions to our athletic program and to the life of our school.

  • 3-Sport Athletes: Sam Bell, Nate Brisson, Anna Fisher, Jackson Gelinas, Zach Goldenberg, Blair Hamilton, Lucy Kiely, Matt Levy, Rachel Levy, Kate MacNutt, Iris Mustich, Jada Nosworthy, Geena Parlatore, Owen Redmond, and Matt Ross.

The “Big 5” senior awards were presented next.  MacNutt announced “We have male and female winners for each award.  This year’s recipients have combined to earn an impressive: 4 selections as New England All-Stars, 8 MVP Awards, 9 Coaches Awards, 12 Selections as HVAL All-Stars, and have played on a total of 91 Wooster teams in their careers.

  • The Edward W. Robinson ‘37 Award:  Goes to two students who have consistently displayed courage, character, determination, and true sportsmanship.  This year’s recipients truly embody what Wooster Athletics are all about.
    • Recipients:  Anna Fisher and Matt Levy

 

  • The J. William Nystrom, Sr. – Scholar Athlete Award: Goes to two individuals who have best displayed intellect in the classroom and ability on the playing fields, representing Wooster’s ideals on both fronts.  
    • Recipients: Lisa Moran and Nate Brisson

 

  • The Tom Wilcox Award for School Spirit in Competitive Athletics: Goes to two students who have displayed great sportsmanship and school spirit while playing on Wooster teams. Both of these individuals can often be heard encouraging their teammates and classmates in their athletic endeavors.  Both of these individuals embody the essence of hard work, the joy of playing, a cooperative spirit – and are positive catalysts in school community. 
    • Recipients: Lisa Moran and Austin Wiegand

 

  • The Alvah Jessup Award for Outstanding Athlete:  Goes to the top male and female athlete in the class.  Both have earned numerous honors this evening.  They are talented young athletes … They are incredible people … And they are terrific ambassadors for both our athletic program and our school.
    • Recipients: Monica Dahlgren and Matt Levy

 

  • The Athletic Commitment Award: Goes to the members of the senior class who have participated on Wooster teams every season during their Upper School careers.  This year, we have two student-athletes who have played on Wooster teams every season since the 6th Grade.
    • Recipients: Nate Brisson and Matt Levy

 Upper School Head Anne Cass was the final speaker of the evening and commended all student-athletes and coaches for representing Wooster in fine fashion throughout the school year and for their wonderful contributions to the life of our community.
